Terminology: Meaning of Unlock, Jailbreak, Activate, Baseband, Firmware, Restore and DFU

1) Unlock - to enable the phone to use other that the intended telco.
2) Jailbreak - to open/hack the system so users can modify or access the filesystem.
3) Activate - to enable the phone from a ‘locked’ state i.e emergency call only to the springboard (where all the icons are). This ‘locked’ state is not the same as sim lock. Only after you activate that you can go to springboard.

Why we need to activate?

So that the phone will check whether we are using an authorize sim with the phone or not. If we are not using an authorize sim (lock phones), then we can get to the springboard and cant use the phone. We can only get to the emergency call part only.

OTB (Out of The Box) unlock iPhone still need to be activated so it can check the sim card if its valid. You might ask “Why it still need to check the sim if its already unlock and can accept any sim?”. Well this is just a process that all iphone need to go thru, locked or unlocked.

This goes the same with locked phones. We need to jailbreak the phone first so that we can access the filesystem. Then we ‘hacktivate’ or activate the phone by tricking it with a spoof activation. This bypass the itunes checking and let us gain access to the springboard. Only after that we can unlock the phone (if a software unlock is available). So to a locked phone, the most important process to do is jailbreaking. With it we can do the activating and unlocking.

Unlock phone need to:
1. Activate thru iTunes only
2. Jailbreaking is optional if user want to use 3rd party apps
3. No need to unlock
*Unlock phone can update/upgrade to any firmware without worry because it will remain unlock whereas locked phones have to wait for it to be able to jailbreak and if there is a baseband update, an unlock sollution must be present.

Locked phone need to:
1. Jailbreak so we can gain access to the phone (mandatory)
2. Activate the phone thru ‘hacktivation’ or activation spoof (also mandatory)
3. Unlock the phone with a software unlocking sollution to use with other sim (also mandatory)

Baseband
The baseband is a subsystem on the phone that handles phone line communication. Modifying this subsystem is how unlocks are achieved. These are updated in iTunes with new firmware versions. iTunes will not downgrade your baseband. Currently, an iTunes restore will not modify your baseband unless your baseband is erased or downgraded prior to the restore.

Firmware:
The firmware is the operating system installed on your phone. The firmware versions include 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4, 2.0.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2 and 2.1. All jailbreaking only affects the firmware, not the bootloader or baseband. This is why restoring will undo a jailbreak but will not affect an unlock.

Restore / Upgrade:
iTunes provides two options to change the firmware on your phone. Restore and upgrade. Restore is a full erase and reprogramming of your device. This will result in a factory fresh device. All songs and contacts are wiped out. Upgrade will only wipe out the smaller disk partition leaving all your songs and settings intact. Upgrade is only useful if you are trying to go from one version to the next version of firmware. It will not solve any problems on your phone unless they are naturally solved by the new firmware. I generally recommend using restore in all cases.

DFU Mode vs Restore mode:
DFU (device firmware upgrade) mode is a special mode that bypasses the operating system and lets you upgrade the device. When in DFU mode, the phone will have no display on the screen. Restore mode is more common. In this mode you can also restore or upgrade your device, but it is not as drastic as DFU mode. Many restore problems can be solved by using DFU mode.

If you're a normal student, you probably love your cell phone. It provides a connection to all the important people in your life. But did you know that the cell phone can actually be a handy device for aiding in homework and studies, and it can be a great safety feature, as well?

1. Cell Phones and Time Management

Reminders and alarms are some of the most useful tools on a cell phone, but they are also the least appreciated.

Most cell phones come with a scheduler to allow you to set an alarm at a certain time of day or on a certain date. You can set alarms to remind you of an established daily homework time to keep you from chatting right through your work time. For instance, you can set up a beeper that goes off every night at 7.

You could also use calendar reminders to notify you when projects and assignments are due. These reminders can be set up weeks and months ahead of time.

2. Group Communication

If you find yourself working on a group project or needing the advice of a few friends as you do your history homework, try using the three-way calling feature. It’s available on most cell phones.

You may not even be aware that this feature is available on your phone, so you may want to experiement a little. First call one friend and establish a clear connection. Then enter the number of a second friend on the keypad and press send. If your phone has the three-way feature, then the second call will go through and the first friend will be on hold. Simply press send again to re-connect with the first friend.

3. Cell Phone as Audio Tool

Some cell phones come equipped with a voice recorder. This tool can be priceless if you tend to forget things. You can use the recorder to remember homework assignments, to memorize terms, to practice foreign language pronunciation, and dozens of other tasks. It’s a great feature for auditory learners.

If your phone doesn’t have the voice recording feature, you can accomplish many of the same tasks by sending yourself a voice message.

4. Pictures and Illustrations

More and more phones come equipped with picture-sharing features. This is important because pictures can be used as illustrations in reports and presentations. If you’re in the library or out and about and you see an image that would work for a project, simply capture the image on your phone.

The are several ways you may be able to save and transfer the picture. Depending on the cell phone, you may be able to use a memory card, Bluetooth technology, or a USB cable that connects your cell phone with your computer. You may have to do a little detective work to find the best method for your phone.

5. Podcasts

Right now it’s pretty expensive and cumbersome to access a podcast from most cell phones, since many cell phones require the middle step of downloading a podcast to a computer. But technology is barreling along pretty quickly. With the advent of cell phone/MP3 player combos, the prospect of widespread podcast sharing is growing ever more likely. Look for teachers/professors sending podcasts and students accessing them more and more.

6. Cell Phones and Ebooks

If your phone has a built-in Internet browser, you have a whole library at your fingertips! Basically, if you can access the Internet through your phone, you can read ebooks from a variety of great sites.

One good source for ebooks comes from text2ph.com, a site that allows you to access books stored on its server. You just download a few pages at a time. There are hundreds of ebooks available on the site. You don’t even have to download any software to use this service.

Using your cell phone, call someone who has access to your spare remote keys—but you must call them on another cell phone. Ask that person to hold your press “unlock” into their phone. At the same time, you hold your phone within a foot of your car door. The signal can unlock your door! This doesn’t work with all keys and all phones, but it’s worth a try. See if it works!

change profile
play his ringtone even if phone is on silent
play his songs(in his phone)
restart the phone switch off the phone restore factory settings
change ringing - And here comes the “Call from his phone” it includes all call functions like hold etc.

Install:

1) Download
2) Put it on the mobile
3) Run the Installer (what you download, incidentally need JAVA)
4) He finds it, and you will be able to run software
5) Choose the language and going configured
6) Click Connection
7) Click search devices Choose the “victim”AND MANAGE

Not content with the recent port of Android to the Nokia N810, members of the pocked pc forum ppcgeeks.com have successfully managed to port Android over to the HTC Titan handset.

Like previous incarnations of the Android OS, the port still relies on the Windows Mobile OS underneath it, but after successfully loading the software into RAM, the Android OS can take over the the GUI and give users an early demo of things to come.

Users who have successfully ported the Android OS to their HTC devices report a working touch screen along with the ability to make calls and browse the internet.
